Janvier 2008

Vendredi, le 21 Décembre 2007                       Fête de Noël

It was nice to see such a ‘full house’ for the meeting. We must be doing something right.

Many thanks to Gerry and Evelyn for serving the ‘welcoming drink’. It was very good to see Gerry back in the role. Also our thanks to the helpers for decorating the room. The cleaner said that she had never seen it look so nice! And more thanks to Sally and Ken for organising the ‘Scarabée Française’.

John Topliss and Caroline - the accordionists - provided good entertainment for the evening and we all seemed to enjoy singing Christmas Carols to their accompaniment. The ‘AF girls choir’ were in especially good voice; and some superb, impromptu ‘descants’ from the top table did not go unnoticed.

The planned entertainment - Patrick Cooke, a traditional street organ grinder - was cancelled at the last moment because he suffered a heart problem. We understand that he is recovering well and we send him our best wishes. Many thanks to Tony Fenwick for arranging the two accordionists at short notice.

Yet more thanks to Joan and Brenda for organising a very successful tombola. This raised the very respectable sum of £50 and the Committee has decided that the entire proceeds should be donated to St. Giles Hospice - for their care in looking after Cath Gamble who passed away recently and was previously a member of the Club.

Vendredi, le 18 Janvier 2008                        Soireé des Jeux - John Hooper

John has painstakingly organised a package of seven games for our amusement - including skittles, bar football, bagatelle, quoits and shove ha’penny. It promises to be a fun evening - not to be missed.

The meal, after the games, will consist of jacket potatoes with a range of fillings (cheese, coleslaw and beans). If you wish to bring your own specialist fillings then please do so. Wine will be available at 50p per glass or bring your own. Entrance fee is £4:00 per head. Usual start time of 7:30 p.m. for 8:00.

Dîner Annuel

Please note that the date of the annual dinner has been changed - and is now Saturday 15 March 2008. The venue (provisional) is Chloes Restaurant in George Street, Burton. This is a very good restaurant, convenient and the cost is expected to be a most reasonable £20 for a 3-course meal. If you are interested then please speak to Gerry Lomas at the next meeting or ‘phone 01283 845615.

Film Shows

Saturday 16 February. “A Tale of Two Cities” - please note the change of date.

Saturday 1 March. Either – “Ne le dis à personne” (Don’t tell anyone); a blockbuster with 7 film academy awards - or - “Le Retour de Martin Guerre” with 5 academy awards.

Les Visiteurs (highest grossing French box office comedy of all time) - will be shown at a future date.

Club Trip

Consideration is now being given for a Club trip to La Rochelle - last week in April or 2nd week in May. Anyone who is interested please speak to Gerry Lomas.
